Toyota’s Derbyshire plant all set to manufacture Suzuki’s hybrid-electric vehicles

In a move solidifying the collaboration and sharing of resources between the two Japanese carmakers, Toyota has announced that it will begin manufacturing Suzuki’s new hybrid, Corolla Wagon, at its plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire.

Earlier in February 2017, Toyota and Suzuki joined hands and signed a memorandum of understanding to work together. 

 

The Suzuki vehicles will be produced by Toyota’s 2,600 existing employees at the Burnaston facility and, according to Toyota, the prospect of creating new jobs or see any additional investment is bleak, as the production number is expected to be within Burnaston’s existing capacity.

 

The manufacturing of the new Suzuki models, which is to start by the end of 2020, is, however, expected to make the make manufacturing at the Burnaston facility “more efficient”.  Towards this end, Toyota has previously invested £240 million ($314.4 million) in the plant to introduce a more efficient manufacturing processes.

 

Toyota's UK Managing Director, Marvin Cooke, said: "This is good news for our UK plants and demonstrates Toyota's trust in the capability of our workforce to deliver the highest levels of superior quality products. Seeking to produce additional volume for other customers is one example of all the efforts we are making to keep our UK manufacturing operations as competitive as they can be.”

 

“We have consistently said for the medium to longer term, continued free and frictionless trade and common automotive technical standards will be essential to support the international competitiveness of the UK automotive sector,” he added.

 

The Corolla Wagon manufactured at Burnaston will be fitted hybrid engines produced at the carmaker’s engine manufacturing plant at Deeside, North Wales and electrical components from Japan.
