Leipzig plant to produce axles for Porsche's electric vehicles in future

Apr 11, 2019   OEM

Porsche announced that its Leipzig facility will be integrating an axle assembly on-site. The German sports car maker will begin producing the all-electric Macan at this site at the beginning of the next decade.

Till now, Porsche has been outsourcing this step to a system supplier who will continue to work for the current Panamera and Macan models. Porsche Leipzig will be producing its own axles for electric vehicles, making on-site production even more flexible and efficient. Simultaneously, the German sports car manufacturer is also creating more than 100 highly qualified jobs.

"The drive is a unique feature of our sports cars," said Albrecht Reimold, Board Member for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG. "And because electric vehicles need to see the aggregates in combination with the axles, we take over the axle production ourselves. Integration is a central component of our brand and factory strategy. We are thus increasing our manufacturing expertise and investing in the future viability of the Leipzig plant.“

"The decision to implement in-house axle assembly for the next-generation Macan will sharpen the profile of our plant and make it even more flexible," confirmed Gerd Rupp, CEO of Porsche Leipzig GmbH.

The first all-electric compact SUV from Porsche will be based on the so-called PPE architecture (Premium Platform Electric), which Porsche developed together with Audi.

The axle assembly is located close to the factory. Its control is based on the Porsche production system - with clear quality responsibility, short control loops and just-in-sequence connection to vehicle production. The consistent implementation of Porsche Production 4.0 will make the processes much smarter and leaner. All processes are digitally and virtually secured at an early stage.

With the fifth expansion of the Leipzig plant, Porsche is creating the necessary conditions to be able to produce all-electric vehicles on the existing production line in addition to gasoline and hybrid models.
