Osram Continental GmbH, a supplier of smart lighting solutions for automobiles, celebrated the opening of its newest location in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The 21,700-square-foot (2,100-square-metre) facility will initially employ about 65 people and will serve as a R&D centre to support businesses, primarily in the North American region. Dr. Dirk Linzmeier, CEO of Osram Continental GmbH commemorated the event along with other company leaders, employees and local dignitaries.

"The opening of the new facility in Guadalajara is an exciting event for Osram Continental. This is a place of strategic importance that strengthens our presence in the region of Mexico and the Americas and allows us to better serve our regional clients," said Linzmeier. "This facility is an important addition to our global R&D initiatives focussed on intelligent automotive lighting solutions for the evolving automotive market."

During the last decade, Mexico has been one of the fastest growing automotive markets in the world and is currently the fourth largest exporter in the industry. According to IHS Markit, in the last four years, the production of vehicles in Mexico increased by 25%, reaching approximately four million vehicles in 2018. This growth is driven by the presence of almost all major global brands in the country.

"As automotive lighting continues to evolve from a basic function to a highly sophisticated feature, it gives our customers the opportunity to differentiate their products with lighting design," said Julian Dench, Director of the Americas region and Managing Director of Osram Continental Mexico. "We see enormous potential for smart automotive lighting applications in the American market."

With the start of operations in July 2018, Osram Continental will become an innovative player in the automotive lighting industry with the aim of shaping the future of mobile lighting. As digitalisation continues to transform the automotive industry, the joint venture is well positioned to use its combined expertise to offer intelligent lighting solutions to its global customers.
